A Vision of Intelligent Train Control

The progressive adoption of artificial intelligence and advanced communication technologies within railway control automation has brought up a huge potential in terms optimisation, learning adaptation, due to the so-called “self-x” capabilities; however, it also raised several dependability concerns lack measurable trust that is needed for certification purposes. In this paper, we provide vision future train builds upon existing automatic operation, protection, supervision paradigms. We will define basic concepts autonomous driving digital railways, summarise its feasibility challenges opportunities, including explainability, autonomic computing, twins. Due clear architectural distinction, protection can act as safety envelope intelligent operation optimise energy, comfort, capacity, while based on signal recognition obstacle detection improve through assistance.
